M. Richard (Rick) Smith joined the Evergreen Energy Board of Directors in November 2008. He was associated with Bechtel Corporation in various senior management roles for 30 years, and over the course of his career, he managed multiple power and energy projects along with transactions totaling more than $10 billion. Smith retired as president of Bechtel Fossil Power in 2007. Before that, he was CEO of Intergen, a Bechtel-Shell joint venture that operated and eventually sold 17 power plants in Europe, Asia and the Americas. He was vice president of Bechtel Enterprises from 2000 to 2004 and was responsible for Bechtel's development and investment activities in the energy sector. Smith holds a master's degree in business administration from Golden Gate University, a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Northeastern University, and a bachelor's of science degree in aerospace engineering from Auburn University.

Mr. Bartels has served as the General Manager Global Energy & Utilities Industry of IBM’s energy and utility business since January 2005, which includes electricity, gas, water and waste management companies. Mr. Bartels joined IBM in 1988 and has assumed roles of increasing responsibility. Currently he serves as a member of IBM’s Integration & Values Team, the 300 top leaders from across the company and leads IBM’s corporate initiative around building an 'Intelligent Utility Network,' IBM’s portfolio of offerings and capabilities for the Smart Grid. In addition to his IBM role, Mr. Bartels serves as Chairman of the GridWise™ Alliance, a leading advocacy group of private and public companies that supports a national imperative for modernizing the electric system of the United States. Bartels is also a member of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Electricity Advisory Committee (EAC), a 30 member group representing some of the country’s top public and private sector electricity and energy policy leaders. Mr. Bartels is a Dutch citizen and holds an MBA degree in business economics from the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Mr. Clark is CEO and manager of Bear Cub Energy, LLC, a natural gas gathering, processing and treating company headquartered in Denver, Colorado. Bear Cub Energy has operating facilities in Texas. Mr. Clark founded a predecessor company, Bear Paw Energy, LLC in 1995. It was sold to Northern Border Partners in 2001. Prior to that, Mr. Clark held senior officer positions with Snyder Oil Corporation, Ladd Petroleum Corporation and Nicor Inc.
Mr. Clark serves on the Board of Directors of Storm Cat Energy Corporation, a publicly traded exploration and production company and Fluid Compressor Corporation, a privately held compressor packaging company. Mr. Clark received his BS in accounting from Bradley University in 1967 and his MBA from Northern Illinois University in 1974.
William G. Gibson

Mr. Gibson is a seasoned executive with over 35 years experience in high technology. Mr. Gibson has served on the Board of Directors of a privately held bio-fuel renewable energy company since November 2007. Mr. Gibson served as president and Chief Executive Officer of Network General Corporation, from November 2005 through November 2007, which was acquired by NetScout in November 2007. Previously, he served as a Senior Executive Consultant at Silver Lake Partners from February 2005 through November 2005. In addition, Mr. Gibson has held the position of Chief Operation Officer of Crystal Decision, Inc., a provider of business intelligence software and services, where he helped orchestrate the restructure and refocus of a slow growing desktop software company into an enterprise ready software category leader. Gibson also held management, operations and sales positions at industry-leading companies such as AT&T Corporation, Lucent Technologies, Inc., NEC Corporation, Rogers Cantel Mobile Communications, Inc., Securitylink, Sharp Electronics and Sprint PCS.

Manuel H. Johnson is the co-chairman and senior partner in the investment and consulting firm of Johnson Smick International, Inc., (JSI). JSI invests with money management funds and provides information services on important economic and political policy changes in major countries that impact global financial institutions located throughout the world. Prior to assuming his current duties, Dr. Johnson was Vice Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System where he served for four and a half years beginning in February 1986. Dr. Johnson served as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury from 1982-1986. From 1977 to 1994, Dr. Johnson was a professor of economics at George Mason University where he held the Koch Chair in International Economics. Dr. Johnson currently serves on the board of directors of the Morgan Stanley Funds Group, RBS Greenwich Capital Holdings, NVR Inc., Investment Company Institute, and is currently Chairman of the Financial Accounting Foundation, the organization that supervises the preparation of U.S. accounting standards.

An accomplished researcher, educator, consultant and author, including 12 books and 14 Harvard Business Review articles, Professor Kaplan focuses on linking cost and performance management systems to strategy implementation and operational excellence. The Financial Times has included Professor Kaplan among its list of Top 25 Business Thinkers and he has additionally been named to the Top 50 Thinkers and Writers on Management Topics by the Accenture Institute for Strategic Change in 2002 and 2003. His latest book, “Strategy Maps,” co-written with David Norton, was published in 2004.

Thomas H. Stoner

Mr. Stoner has served as CEO and a member of Evergreen Energy's Board of Directors on June 2009, and served as president from June 2009 through November 2009. He was chief executive officer of Econergy International PLC from 1998 to October 2008 and chairman of the company's independent directors in 2008. He was chairman of the board from 1996 to 2006. Stoner successfully led Econergy from a small consulting service to a world-class renewable energy company operating as a power producer throughout the Americas. He has served as a technical advisor in more than a dozen countries. In February, 2006 Econergy went public on the London Stock Exchange AIM. In June, 2008 Suez South America, a wholly owned subsidiary of the GDF SUEZ Group, announced its offer to buy Econergy International. Before Econergy's 2006 IPO, it was one of the pioneers in the burgeoning carbon trading markets, and developed the first methodology submitted to the governing body of the clean development mechanism (CDM), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). At the end of 2006 Econergy was the world's leading developer of CDM projects.Stoner is an economist and financial analyst. He is former president and CEO of EUA Highland Corporation and vice president of EUA Cogenex, both subsidiaries of Eastern Utilities, a Boston-based utility holding company traded on the NYSE. Stoner studied economics at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and Harvard University, and holds a master of science degree from the London School of Economics and a bachelor of arts from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Mr. Winter currently serves on the boards of First Western Trust Bank, the University of Colorado Department of Economics and the Bard Center for Entrepreneurship. Previously, he was a member of the board of directors of Econergy International, one of the premier carbon trading companies after the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol, and chairman of Highland Energy Group, a venture capital funded energy Management company. Mr. Winter served on the Econergy Board with Tom Stoner and Richard Perl. He served on the Board of Highland Energy with Tom Stoner. In addition, Mr. Winter served on the Boards of Directors of Clinical Diagnostics, Inc., U.S. Wireless Data and Soleron Corp., all public companies. He has also completed the owner/president management program at the Harvard Business School and eighteen volunteer projects with businesses in developing countries around the world.
